The Senior Research Engineer II independently applies advanced knowledge of scientific research or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Uses a wide application of complex principles, theories and concepts in the specific field or fields. Works on complex problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of intangible variance factors. Acts as a principal investigator on various projects.
Carries out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved research or engineering techniques and procedures. Work is expected to result in the development of new or refined equipment, materials, processes, products, and/or scientific methods and approaches.
In a supervisory capacity, plans, develops, coordinates, and directs a large and significant project, or several small projects with numerous complex features; may require the use of sophisticated project planning techniques.
Develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others. Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed tests, products and equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable.
Presents invited papers; primary author or key contributor on major reports, products, papers, presentations, and peer reviewed journals. Widely recognized by key customers/grantors/investigators as being central to their mission; typically directs/participates in major proposal preparation and presentation.
Develops and initiates technical standards through interactions with professional societies and key clients. Provides ideas to improve organizational efficiency at all levels of the unit/department. Plays a key role in the acquisition of research funding; identifies sources of new contract funding and directs the preparation of proposals and presentations
Effectively uses peer network to expand technical capability and business development opportunities; significant involvement in external seminars, workshops, professional societies, and committees; develops and initiates technical standards through interactions with professional societies and key clients.
Participates in strategic planning. Plays a key role in the acquisition of research funding; identifies sources of new contract funding and directs the preparation of proposals and presentations.

Master's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ph.D. in AERO or Mechanical Engineering.
Eight years of related experience.
Experimental experience in high-speed aerothermodynamics and fluid mechanics, including shock/boundary layer interactions, aerothermochemistry, aerodynamic performance, fluid structure interactions, flow control, and hypersonic system performance.
Experience in high-speed aerodynamic experimental design, diagnostic methods, and computational fluid dynamics.
Diagnostics experience related to the measurement of high-speed flows including free stream properties, near surface phenomena and post shockwave conditions.
Experimental experience in nonlinear optics, gas dynamics, high-strain-rate material deformations and plasma processes.
Experimental experience in research of layered materials and structures to mitigate hypervelocity impacts, in situ dynamic materials characterization and forensic materials science.
Experimental experience in research related to long range identification of high-speed threats and advanced deflection methodologies.
Experimental experience in research methods to correct for distortions associated with the propagation of coherent and incoherent light through turbulent and partially obscuring media and may include the development of advanced guide star concepts, filaments and plasma based methods for correction and guiding.

Experience in the development of applied research programs enabling system integration.
