Title: Transition Due to Patterns of Roughness on a Supersonic Flat Plate

    Speaker: Dr. Amanda Chou

BIO: Dr. Amanda Chou is a research aerospace engineer in the Flow Physics & Control Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. Her research has primarily focused on using experiments to help develop tools in the modeling of the physics in high-speed laminar-turbulent transition. Dr. Chou received her B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics & Astronautics from Purdue University.

ABSTRACT: The problem of high-speed boundary layer transition is one that has traditionally been dealt with using algebraic correlations relating some transition parameter to a disturbance parameter. As our transition prediction tools begin to mature, we can start to apply some of our semi-empirical methods to aid in the prediction of transition due to roughness in high-speed boundary layers. As part of a study in collaboration with computational efforts, a series of experiments was conducted to try to glean more information about the physical mechanisms responsible for transition in the wake of small roughness on a flat plate with a Mach 3.5 freestream. This presentation will highlight the primary findings for the mode shapes & frequencies of the dominant instabilities relative to different roughness patterns.
