The AIAA Hampton Roads Section (HRS) Young Professionals Committee is proud to host a lecture series to highlight the significant technical contributions of AIAA HRS Young Professionals. The Fall 2021 lecture will take place in a virtual lunch & learn format featuring the work of the 2022 Robert A. Mitcheltree Young Engineer of the Year Award winner, Dr. Robin Hunt. Attendance is encouraged and open to all!

The Isolator Dynamics Research Laboratory at NASA Langley Research Center
    By Dr. Robin Hunt

BIO: Dr. Robin Hunt is a research aerospace engineer in the Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion Branch at NASA Langley Research Center.  She received her B.S. degree from the University of Maryland and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan.  Her research is focused on isolator shock trains, the complex shock wave system that compresses air flow before the combustor in high-speed airbreathing engines.

ABSTRACT: The Isolator Dynamics Research Laboratory (IDRL) is a recently overhauled Mach 2.5 wind tunnel facility at NASA Langley. It is designed for fundamental and applied research on isolator shock trains, the complex shock wave system that compresses air flow before the combustor in high-speed airbreathing engines, such as dual-mode ramjets and scramjets.  Two ongoing projects in the IDRL will be presented. The first project concerns controlling the position of the shock train within the isolator duct to improve engine performance while avoiding unstart, a critical type of engine failure.  The second project uses a laser diagnostic technique, called filtered Rayleigh scattering (FRS), to gather accurate quantitative measurements of the IDRL shock train and improve our understanding of the isolator fluid dynamics.
