The AIAA Hampton Roads Section (HRS) Young Professionals Committee is proud to host a lecture series to highlight the significant technical contributions of AIAA HRS Young Professionals. The Spring 2021 lecture will take place in a virtual lunch & learn format featuring the work of the 2021 Laurence Bement Young Professionals Paper Competition winner, Dr. Prahladh Iyer. Attendance is encouraged and open to all!

A Numerical Study of Shear Layer Characteristics of Low-Speed Transverse Jets
    By Dr. Prahladh Iyer

BIO: Dr. Prahladh Iyer works as a Senior Research Scientist at the National Institute of Aerospace and as a resident researcher in the Computational Aerosciences Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. He obtained his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2015. His research interests are broadly in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), with a focus on DNS/LES of turbulent flows, turbulence modeling, laminar-turbulent transition, high-speed flows and numerical methods for complex geometries.

ABSTRACT: Direct numerical simulation (DNS) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) are used to study the shear layer characteristics of a jet in a crossflow. Point velocity spectra at different points along the shear layer show excellent agreement with experiments. DMD of the full three-dimensional flow field is able to reproduce the dominant frequencies observed from DNS and shows that the shear layer modes are dominant for both the conditions simulated. It is found that a counter-current mixing layer is obtained in the upstream shear layer. The corresponding mixing velocity ratio is obtained and seen to delineate the two regimes of absolute or convective instability. The effect of the nozzle and jet shear layer thickness on the flow are also briefly discussed.
