Louis Friedman is the co-founder of The Planetary Society with Carl Sagan and Bruce Murray, and served as its Executive Director from 1979-2010. Prior to that he was Advanced Programs Leader at JPL and worked on the development of the Voyager, Galileo, and Magellan projects and was Manager of the post-Viking Mars Program. He led the solar sail Halley Comet Rendezvous technical development. In 1978-79 he was the AIAA Congressional Science Fellow. Since retiring he has written three books, serves on the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts External Committee, and is working on fast missions to fly into and through the solar system, including reaching the solar gravity lens focus at 600+ AU to image exoplanets.
