    Good morning, Indiana!

Hannah Snyderburn, here, I'm an aerospace engineer working for the Navy. I'm originally from the NoVA/DC area but have also lived at all corners of the CONUS. I'm hoping to find some other AIAA members in my area to network with. I know IU doesn't have a strong engineering presence but because of Crane, I bet there's a lot of like-minded folks nearby.

I'm trying to be more involved with my region and am wondering if there's anyone who lives in the Bloomington area and/or work at NSWC Crane. Would love to connect!

With regards to contacts in the Southern Indiana, especially related to engineering and Aerospace, Cummins located in Columbus IN, likely has employees living in the Bloomington area.  Cummins is hosting a Materials Science & Engineering for Sustainability event on March 3 (contact Roberta Mullins mullinsb90@gmail.com for details).  They have expanded into fuel cells in addition to traditional power sources (but many other topics will be covered).

Many engineers live between Bloomington and Indianapolis, from several Indianapolis employers like Rolls-Royce (aerospace turbines), Allison Transmission (military hardware), Linde Advanced Material Technologies (additive and advanced coating materials) and Carrier (heating/cooling/dehumidification).

Perhaps a little further North (some live on the North-side of Indianapolis in communities like Carmel, Westfield and Zionsville) you may find researchers from:

West of Bloomington in Terre Haute, IN is Rose Hulman with engineering related to Aerospace - https://www.rose-hulman.edu/news/2024/rocketry-propulsion-group-launches-collegiate-lander-challenge-effort.html

Several years ago, I gave a presentation on metal additive manufacturing at Crane as part of a National Defense Industrial Association seminar.  Currently we supply many special alloys for Space Propulsion Applications (generally spherical powder for 3D printing by laser – powder bed) and are a recent licensee of NASA to supply GRX-810 – an ODS alloy to resist creep at elevated temperatures (significantly improving strength at 1093 C).

Indiana has a long history associated with transportation and the manufacturing industry; from our forest came carriages and steamboats then early automobiles (1894 Elwood Haynes built a "horseless carriage" or the first automobile in IN), the Wright brothers were born in Newcastle, IN and the state was an early adopter of highways and has the most interstate highways of any state (easing travel from Crane or Bloomington to Fort Wayne on I-69, Cummins to West Lafayette on I-65; Rose Hulman to AFRL in Dayton on I-70, Greenwood to South Bend on US 31, etc.; all connecting in Indianapolis, the Cross Roads of America).  https://www.travelindiana.com/discover-indianas-transportation-history-all-around-the-state/

Don't get me started on our round barns (inspiration for missile silos?).
