Lunch and Learn at China Garden: Careers and Collaboration in Hypersonics at AFRL with Guest Speaker

Abstract: In this general interest talk, Dr. Smarslok will talk about ways to pursue a career with AFRL and collaborate in hypersonics research. Dr. Smarslok has led a team dedicated to develop a Workforce Strategy for the AFRL Hypersonics Enterprise to ensure AFRL has an agile, diverse, multidisciplinary workforce equipped to advance hypersonic science and technology. This seminar will include a brief overview of AFRL’s mission and legacy, as well as showcase the world-class experimental facilities across the US dedicated to hypersonics research. In addition, Dr. Smarslok’s talk will cover a variety of programs open to applicants seeking a career in hypersonics, and opportunities for students, professors, and researchers in industry and academia to engage with AFRL in hypersonics research and development.

Biography: Dr. Ben Smarslok is a Senior Research Aerospace Engineer in the Structural Sciences Center within the High-Speed Systems Division at the Air Force Research Laboratory. His research focus is on quantifying and reducing uncertainty in coupled aerothermoelastic response predictions for hypersonic aircraft structures. Since 2020, Dr. Smarslok has also led the AFRL Hypersonics Enterprise Workforce Development IPT. Ben joined AFRL in 2009 after receiving his Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida. While at AFRL, Dr. Smarslok was an Adjunct Instructor in the Mechanical & Materials Department at Wright State University. Ben is a Senior Member of AIAA, and recently served as Chair of the Non-Deterministic Approaches (NDA) Technical Committee.
