AIAA CbA CoI - Aviation Meeting

When:  Jun 10, 2026 from 19:00 to 20:30 (PT)

AIAA CbA CoI Members and Interested Individuals,

Next week on June 10, 2026, we will be meeting in-person at the AIAA Aviation Conference in San Diego. In the Committee Meeting PDF on the Aviation Program website (link here), we are listed as the “Certification by Analysis Community of Interest / UQ4CbA” meeting. This meeting will be in-person only, and logistics are as follows:

Date:   Wednesday, June 10, 2026

Time:   7:00 – 8:00 pm

Room: Manchester Grand Hyatt, Balboa A

Agenda:

7:00 – 7:15 Welcome

7:15 – 7:45 Presentation by Bimal Aponso (FAA)

7:45 – 8:00 Updates on the Challenge Problem from the organizing team

8:00 – 8:30 Participant Engagement and Q&A

If you or your team would like to share any updates of your own, or if there are any particular subjects that you would like the organizing team to discuss, please let us know by this Friday COB so that we can work those topics into the last 45 minutes of our agenda.

Further details on the presentation by Bimal Aponso are included below:

Abstract:

The value of modeling and simulation is realized by its ability to accurately simulate and predict the dynamic behavior of the actual system. Flight testing is necessary to assess the accuracy of simulation models and demonstrate compliance with regulations. There is an increasing desire to place greater reliance on modeling and simulation to demonstrate compliance with regulations and reduce the need for flight testing.  How well a model represents the characteristics of the actual aircraft then becomes a key question that the regulator needs to understand and evaluate. Several studies, including those sponsored by NASA and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), examined the state of the art in modeling and simulation in terms of its capability to demonstrate system safety as required by regulation. This presentation will review past and on-going efforts to assess and understand improvements needed in modeling and simulation to effectively play a larger role in demonstrating compliance to airworthiness regulations.

Speaker Bio:

Bimal Aponso is the FAA’s Chief Scientist and Technical Advisor (CSTA) for Dynamic Systems with particular focus on the applicability of modeling and simulation for certification, flight dynamics and control of eVTOL aircraft, and certification requirements for future commercial supersonic/hypersonic aircraft. He has four decades of experience in modeling and simulation of dynamic systems, vehicle stability and control, and aircraft handling qualities.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you in San Diego!

Regards,

the CbA CoI Organizing Team
