Simulating High-Speed Flows with NASA FUN3D

When:  Jan 22, 2026 from 11:00 to 12:00 (CT)
Associated with  Greater Huntsville Section

Over the last several years, there have been several enhancements to the NASA Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver FUN3D in the areas of high-performance computing (HPC), trajectory-CFD coupling, and mesh adaptation. FUN3D has also been recently coupled to NASA POST2 to enable closed-loop trajectory CFD simulations, including a human-scale Mars lander retropropulsion concept.

Dr. Gabriel Nastac is a research aerospace engineer at NASA’s Langley Research Center. He received his B.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His research interests include GPU computing, high-speed reacting flows, and mesh adaptation.
