Fellow Members,

You are cordially invited to the February Luncheon (purchase of lunch is not required to attend) featuring guest speaker Dr. Will Emrich who will be giving a talk titled Nuclear Rocket Propulsion … the Good, the Bad, and the Fantastic.

The talk will review some of the nuclear rocket propulsion work done by the United States and other countries in the past. It will also describe how nuclear rockets as currently envisioned operate and will examine some of the more fantastic nuclear propulsion concepts studied in the past.

Any AIAA Member attending the Seminar can receive credit for one (1) Professional Development Hour.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Bill Emrich is a senior researcher at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center where he has worked since 1987 on various advanced propulsion concepts such as solar thermal, fusion, and most recently, nuclear thermal propulsion. Currently, he is the principal investigator for the Nuclear Thermal Rocket Element Environmental Simulator (NTREES) which is a facility used to test the performance of prototypic nuclear rocket fuel elements in representative non-nuclear environments. Bill Emrich graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from MIT, and a PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Alabama Huntsville. Bill is a registered professional engineer in California and a fellow in the ASME and an associate fellow in the AIAA. He was also honored by the AIAA as the 2015 Engineer of the Year for his work in nuclear rocket propulsion. In addition to his work at NASA, Bill is also an adjunct instructor at the University of Alabama Huntsville where he periodically teaches a graduate course on nuclear rocket propulsion based on a textbook, he has written on the subject entitled Principles of Nuclear Rocket Propulsion.
