Any Jeopardy fans out there?  If so, now is your chance to take on the role of Alex Trebek and act as a moderator, scorekeeper, or other volunteer position for ONLINE Alabama Academic Quiz Bowl tournaments!

For many years, academic quiz bowl has been a popular extracurricular activity in Alabama schools.  Quiz bowl questions are a mix of different subjects, including STEM topics.  There are roughly 100 active quiz bowl teams across Alabama, in both cities and rural areas.  It’s an activity that many students have diligently worked at for years.  Did you know that in 2019, Liberty Middle School placed 4th in the nation, out of 176 teams, in the NAQT Middle School National Championship?

Without the help of volunteers, the Alabama Quiz Bowl State Championships are at a high risk of being cancelled this year due to the risk COVID-19 poses for large, in-person tournaments. For the events to happen safely, they need to be taken online using Zoom and Buzzin.live

AIAA Greater Huntsville Section is working with the
Alabama Scholastic Competition Association (ASCA) to ensure the events are a success. These tournaments will be fun, fast-paced, and exciting for both AIAA members and students! Since the tournaments will serve as national qualifiers, the top teams will have the opportunity to advance to NAQT’s National Championships.

AIAA volunteers are needed to act as moderators and scorekeepers, but we also need four Statistics Reporters to compile the scores.  All volunteers will receive training prior to the tournaments so everyone will be well-prepared for their role. AIAA Associate Fellow Robin Osborne is serving as tournament director for both events.

These are the dates for the tournaments:

  • Middle School State Championship – Saturday, April 17, 2021
  • High School State Championship – Saturday, May 15, 2021

Each tournament happens in an 8 hour timeframe (approximately), and we have divided it into two 4 hour shifts. You may sign up for a 4 hour shift on one or both Saturdays. To volunteer for these live events, please complete this Google Form

If you’d like to volunteer for less than 4 hours, please add a comment in the last entry of the Google Form,  and we will try to accommodate, but 4 hours is highly preferred, especially for the morning shift, in order to maintain continuity during the preliminary games.

If you have questions about the volunteer roles or anything else related to this event, please e-mail Ragini Acharya at distribution@hsv-aiaa.org.
