AIAA Greater Huntsville Section First Flight Commemoration Contest 2020

To commemorate the anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight and the birth of our industry, the Greater Huntsville Section is sponsoring a contest for relatives of AIAA members and students of AIAA Educator Associates. There are two categories in this competition:

  • Category A: Contestants that are between the ages 12-17 shall submit an essay.
  • Category B: Contestants that are ages 11 and below shall submit a drawing.

WHO CAN ENTER: Any relative of a Greater Huntsville Section member and students of AIAA Educator Associates.  Contestants must list their sponsoring AIAA member and their relationship to the member.

HOW TO ENTER:

  1. Produce an original essay (Category A) or drawing (Category B) on the following theme:

Today, all of our lives have been impacted by the development of aviation. The Wright Brothers were key to this development by successfully manipulating the forces of flight and starting us on the journey to modern day aviation. 

  • Category A: In your essay please discuss: the 4 forces of flight and how the Wright brothers addressed them, and write about one aspect of modern day aviation that interests you (examples: aircraft (any type) design, control tower operations, aircraft propulsion, etc.)
  • Category B: In your drawing, please depict aircraft or rocket propulsion as well as space applications.
  1. Review the essay and drawing criteria on the Entry_Form.docx.
  2. The essay may contain images and diagrams, correctly cited, along with original graphics and artwork. A drawing could be black and white or color but it should be drawn by hand using paper, and pencil color water color, oil paint, or crayons. A coherent message to address the theme is essential.
  3. Email your essay and the Entry_Form.docx to distribution@hsv-aiaa.org no later than 11:59 PM CST on December 13th, 2020.

JUDGING: A panel of judges comprised of Greater Huntsville Section members will review and evaluate the essays. The contestant receiving the highest score according to the criteria attached will be the winner.

DEADLINE: The completed entry form with the Word or .pdf file containing the essay must be received at distribution@hsv-aiaa.org no later than 11:59 pm CST on December 13th.

PRIZES:
Category A: All entrants will receive an orientation flight in a light aircraft via the EAA Young Eagles program. The essay contest winner will likely receive a free hour of flight instruction in addition to the orientation flight.  
NOTE: This age limit (12-17) is based on the EAA’s guidance for appropriate ages to receive initial flight instruction.

Category B: The contest winner will receive a prize and a certificate. All entrants in this category will receive certificates for participation. All drawings will be featured in AIAA GHS newsletter.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS: The winners in both categories will be announced on December 17, the anniversary of the Wright Brothers first controlled powered flight.
