You are cordially invited to the September Luncheon with Lt. Col. Mike Guthrie, Commander of the North Group of the Alabama Wing, Civil Air Patrol. Lt. Col. Mike Guthrie will be giving a presentation about the missions, structure, and activities of the CAP and the Alabama Wing.
Civil Air Patrol is America’s premier public service organization for carrying out emergency services and disaster relief missions nationwide. As the auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, CAP’s vigilant citizen volunteers are there to search for and find the lost, provide comfort in times of disaster and work to keep the homeland safe. Its 60,000 members selflessly devote their time, energy and expertise toward the well-being of their communities, while also promoting aviation and related fields through aerospace education and helping shape future leaders through CAP’s cadet program.Speaker Bio:
Lt. Col. Guthrie graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1977 with a B.S. in Physics and a commission in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is married and has one son and two daughters, and lives in Madison, AL. He is a private pilot with Single Engine Land (SEL) and Glider ratings and enjoys teaching aerospace science to the CAP cadets.
Before becoming involved with the CAP in 2014, he served in the Army Reserve and Tennessee Army National Guard (TNARNG) and worked as a civilian in the missile defense industry in Huntsville, AL. He retired from the Tennessee ARNG in 2007 at the rank of Colonel. He had served in numerous tactical, operational, and command positions during his career. He served as the Battery Commander of A-Battery, 1-115th FA Battalion, Battalion Commander of the 1-115th FA Battalion, and Provisional Brigade Commander of the 196th FA Brigade, the largest U.S. Army field artillery brigade. His last assignment before retiring from military service was Deputy Commander of the 194th Engineer Brigade, TNARNG. He is the recipient of the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, the Medal of St. Barbara, and the Garde Nationale Trophy.
In his civilian career, Dr. Guthrie has worked in a number of defense related research areas including missile impact detection technology, post-intercept assessment, target acquisition, and lethality analysis. He is retired from Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE) and BAE Systems. He has also worked for Analytical Services, Artic Slope Research Corporation (ASRC), Boeing, and Davidson Technologies and is currently employed by FreEnt Technologies in Huntsville, AL. He is the recipient of several industry awards and holds four patents.
