January Luncheon with Dr. Jessica Gaskin - The Lynx X-ray Observatory

You are cordially invited to the January Luncheon (purchase of lunch is not required to attend) featuring guest speaker Dr. Jessica Gaskin who will be giving a talk titled The Lynx X-ray Observatory: A Concept for a Next Generation X-ray Telescope.

Lynx is a concept for the next great X-ray observatory currently being considered for prioritization in the Astro2020 Decadal Survey. If prioritized, Lynx would follow JWST and WFIRST to be the next flagship mission funded by NASA and would launch in the 2030s.

Any AIAA Member attending the Seminar can receive credit for one (1) Professional Development Hour.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Gaskin has worked for NASA MSFC for 15 years as a civil servant. Her professional career has included leading, managing and supporting multiple large to small projects across x-ray and gamma ray high-energy astrophysics, heliophysics, and planetary science. Dr. Gaskin is currently the appointed Study Scientist for the Lynx X-ray Observatory. Lynx is the next Flagship x-ray high-energy Astrophysics mission, currently in concept phase, for prioritization in the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal. She is also Deputy PI for the LargE Area Polarimeter (LEAP) ISS-mounted instrument, currently in proposal-phase, which will measure polarization of gamma-ray bursts, and she is Principal Investigator for the development of a Mars miniaturized - Scanning Electron Microscope. In addition to these efforts, Dr. Gaskin is an associate editor for the Journal of Astronomical Instrumentation (JAI), a World Scientific publication and regularly participates in public outreach. Recent awards for her work include NASA Group Achievement Award to Astrophysics Large Mission Study Team, NASA MSFC Innovation Peer Award, NASA Federal Women’s Program Outstanding Achievement Award, and Science Olympiad – UAH Appreciation Award for 20 years of Service. She has over 90 publications (peer-reviewed Journals and Conference Proceedings as primary- and co-author) on topics ranging from x-ray and gamma ray astrophysics to planetary science.
