Dear AIAA Greater New Orleans Section Members,

With summer marking the beginning of a new term for our section, as Chair, I would like to thank our officers for their continued service.   This year's officers include Jace Boudreax serving as College STEM Outreach Chair, our Treasurer Dawn Davis, Secretary Mark McCandless, and Membership Chair Larry de Quay.  Please join me in thanking them for their dedication to promoting excellence in the aerospace community.

We are in the process of phasing out our section's current website; the transition to the new site will occur August 10.  Please contact me if you have web design skills and are interested in supporting our section by serving as our Webmaster.  Our new website will be located at the following address: https://engage.aiaa.org/greaterneworleans/home

LSU Chapter is planning to compete next summer in the 2019 Spaceport America Cup rocketry competition in Las Cruces, NM.  LSU section is looking for mentors with high-powered flight certifications from the National Association of Rocketry or Tripoli Rocketry Association.  Please contact Jacob Miller at jmil217@lsu.edu and Robert Frazee at rfraze1@lsu.edu for details on the competition.

The 2018 Regional Leadership Conference will occur in conjunction with the AIAA SPACE Forum at the Hyatt Regency Orlando during the week of September 17.  Travel stipend funding is available to support section officer participation.  Please let me know if you are interested in representing GNO Section at the RLC.  Additional information on the conference is available at the following website: https://www.aiaa.org/RLC2018/

Our next dinner lecture will occur October 10 at the Abita Brewery Visitor Center and Tap Room, located at 166 Barbee Road, Covington, LA 70433.  Historian John Laurence Busch will discuss the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by steamship with a presentation based upon his book "Steam Coffin: Captain Moses Rogers & the Steamship Savannah".  The event will include a tour of the brewery at 4:45 p.m., followed by Mr. Busch's presentation at 6:15 p.m.  Participation is free to AIAA student members and $10 for AIAA members and their guests.  Please RSVP by September 26 and share the attached flyer with your contacts and social networks.

Our section needs additional officers and volunteers to support our ambitious schedule for the 2018 – 2019 term.   Opportunities to participate in event planning, STEM outreach, and leadership are available.  Student members interested in gaining career experience are welcome to apply.  Members with all levels of interest and availability are encouraged to participate, please contact me for more information.

    Very respectfully,

    Glen Guzik
