    Thank you for your continued support of the AIAA and dedication to shaping the future of aerospace in Louisiana and Southern Mississippi.  November 14 marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 12, the second crewed mission to land on the Moon.  With Thanksgiving right around the corner, let us reflect on the legacy of the Apollo program and its indelible impact on the human condition.

    Educator associates are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $500 through the AIAA Foundation Classroom Grant Program.  The deadline to submit a grant proposal is January 17, 2020.  A free AIAA membership is available to all K-12 educators.  See the following for more information on the program:

    The AIAA Foundation annually awards financial aid to undergraduate and graduate students in science or engineering programs.  In the past 20 years, the AIAA Foundation has provided over 750 scholarships and graduate awards to students at more than 150 colleges and universities worldwide.  The deadline to submit an application is January 31, 2020.  Students may apply online at the following location: https://www.aiaa.org/scholarships/ 

    Our section will tour the LIGO facility in Livingston Parish on February 5, 2020.  LIGO made history in 2015 with the first direct detection of gravitational waves and has recently partnered with Japan's Kamioka Gravitational-Wave Detector (KAGRA) to create a new and unprecedented detection capability.  To attend the tour, please RSVP to Larry de Quay at larry.dequay-1@nasa.gov

    Congressional Visits Day is planned for March 18, 2020.  CVD is an opportunity for AIAA members to build relationships with, and offer support as a technical resource to, national policymakers and their staff.  Travel subsidy applications are due February 1, 2020.  A volunteer state captain is needed to support our membership's participation, please get in touch if you are interested in leading this activity.  See the following for more information on CVD:

    The Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair is planned for February 10-13, 2020 at Tulane University.  Please contact Jace Boudreaux at jace.boudreaux@gmail.com to join the science fair working group and help with judging Louisiana and Southern Mississippi science and engineering fairs.  See the following for more information on GNOSEF.

    The Propulsion and Energy forum will occur in New Orleans on August 24-26, 2020.  Online registration will open in April 2020.  More information on the event is available here:

    Registration is open for the 2020 Region II Student Paper Conference.  The conference will take place in Tuscaloosa on April 6-7, 2020 at the University of Alabama.     Additional officers and volunteers are needed to support our section activities during the 2020 – 2021 term.  Opportunities to participate in event planning, STEM outreach, and leadership are available.  Student members interested in gaining career experience are encouraged to apply.  Members with all levels of interest and availability are encouraged to participate, please contact me at glen.a.guzik@nasa.gov for more information.
