  • 1.  Is there interest in creating a class for the next SciTech conference on a topic from this technical committee?

    Hey folks,

I actually enjoyed the virtual conference this year, but missed the online meeting on monday where our committee was scheduled.
Is there any interest in doing something educational from this group next year?
I teach laser radar as part of my course load and wondered if there is any interest in offering something along those lines.
If there is, it might be interesting to collaborate and have a course with multiple instructors.

    Scott,

Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I used to teach a short 1 day course on 3-D imaging LADAR at SPIE meetings.  It was based on my book:
    https://www.amazon.com/Direct-Detection-Systems-Tutorial-Optical-Engineering/dp/081948072X

Of course there is far more to laser radar than 3-D imaging with wind lidars and differential absorption lidar to name a couple.
I have the original course outline and slides that might provide a starting point if you think that's a good way to go?

The other question I had is what is the process of getting a course into the next SciTech conference?

    Steve-

Not sure? what the specific process is to get such a course integrated into a SciTech conference, but I will check.  I would be interested in the original course outline and slides, if you are able to share those.

       Thanks,

    Scott

    Scott,

I will post the slides from the short course one section at a time starting today on here.

Here is the course outline to start with.

It could be taught as a full day (morning and afternoon)  or two half days or could even be spread out over a whole week with 90 minutes sessions a day.

    Steve-

Looks like a very interesting course from the agenda. I would really believe others would be interested in this opportunity as well.

    Thanks,

    Scott

    Thanks for the feedback,

I could teach it solo, but am curious if anyone wants to team teach it as is or bring their own lidar/ladar material.

Here is the first section of slides for the LADAR course.

To view them properly you have to enter slide show mode as the animations are not vsible otherwise

This is meant for the group to review and evaluate its suitability for use in a course so please don't reuse this material without my permission

    Scott,

Here is the next section of notes on the LADAR range equation.
I am working on creating an app available in the google play store that would provide laser range equation calculations (for free with no advertisements).  The idea is to make the class more interesting by offering people taking it a tool to do exercises themselves related to the course material.

My hope is that the course could be offered for free to people interested who are attending the conference and not be like my experience with SPIE where everyone had to pay steep prices to take the class.
