    Topic

    Ethics for Engineers

In August of 2011, the New York State Education Department mandated that all Registered Engineers in the state require at least one hour of Ethics training during every three year re-registration period as a prerequisite to maintain their license. This course was developed as a response to that need.

Ethical issues not only touch our society as a whole, but also raise lots of questions for organizations, companies, and the workplace in general. We hear arguments for free speech, personal responsibility, and corporate responsibility. There are discussions about the government's role in all this. Suddenly individual actors are confronted with new situations often not covered by the old rules. Social institutions cannot respond overnight to these ripples.... Political institutions also require time before developing new laws and often require the demonstration of real harm before they act. In the meantime, you may have to act. You may be forced to act in a legal 'gray area.

In this lecture, we hope to elucidate the meaning of Ethics versus Morals, introduce means by which to discern ethical issues, how to determine what actions to take in response and give a number of real-life ethical examples as a subject for group discussion.

The MESC is an umbrella engineering society consisting of representatives from AIAA, ASME, IEEE, ASCE,SFPE, AICHE, ASCE and several other professional engineering society sections and chapters in the NYC area. This event is free for everyone to join whether or not you are PE and all are welcome.
