MDAO Lessons-Learned & Best Practices

MDAO (Multi-disciplinary Analysis and Optimization) models for Conceptual Design have evolved over the years from being first focused on Flight centric lower-order analysis codes (e.g. Geometry, Mass Properties, Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Aero-Performance), to the coupling of additional disciplines (e.g. affordability, structures, subsystems, mission effectiveness) at varying levels of fidelity. This expansion in capability has followed the successful adoption of MDAO as an accepted and now expected part of the normal vehicle design process, and recognition of MDAO as a critical enabler for reducing program technical risk, delivering first-time quality, and Model-Based Engineering. This presentation will focus on best practices and lessons-learned from both the development of MDAO models and the application of MDAO on programs within Boeing.

Jim Guglielmo is the manager of the Vehicle Design, Analysis and Optimization Group within Boeing Research & Technology. He has over 25 years of experience within Boeing, with expertise in the areas of aerodynamics, wind tunnel testing, aero-performance, aero database development, and Multidisciplinary Design Analysis & Optimization. For the last ten years, his focus has been on developing MDAO models and running MDAO studies on programs. Jim is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he received both his Bachelor of Science and Master's Degrees in Aerospace Engineering.

Space Technology & RADAR Applications

The task of radar signal processing is the extraction of the target information from the radar echo. The functions of radar extend from the target detection and the coordinate measurement (range, angle of azimuth and elevation) to the measurement of Doppler frequency, the judgement of target property, anti-jammer anti-deception and anti-ARM and so on. This means that modern radar should work in wide band or multi-band, look everywhere all the time, and possess multi-functions. Then it must use advanced signal processing technology to improve the capability of catching the target information. The advanced technologies of radar signal processing involve the advanced processing algorithms and advanced digital processing hardware and software.

Synthetic aperture radar, or SAR, is a completely different way to generate a picture by actively illuminating the ground rather than utilizing the light from the sun as with optical images. The right side of the image above shows how very different SAR images look from optical images. These differences present challenges but also create new capabilities. One major advantage of SAR is simple: Even the best aircraft-mounted or satellite-mounted optical camera is less useful at night and useless when clouds or smoke are present. SAR can capture images at night and see right through clouds and smoke. It is a 24-hour, all-weather technology.

Dr. Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi is working as an Associate Professor and Placements Internship Coordinator at Department of Aerospace Engineering, UPES Dehradun. He has obtained B.Tech in Aeronautical Engineering-Avionics Spz from Aeronautical Society of India, India , MS (By Research) in Ocean Engineering-SAR Applications from IIT Madras, India. He is awarded with Doctorate in Engineering from UPES Dehradun, India. Dr. Chaturvedi is the recipient of Young Scientist-2010 by Korean Marine Environmental Engineering, South Korea. He had been visiting research scholar to Korea Ocean R&D Institute, South Korea (2010-2011). Dr. Chaturvedi had published more than 25 Journal research papers in various Scopus and SCI/WoS databases. He had attended and presented research papers in many conferences (approx..70) such as IEEE-IGARSS, IEEE-APSAR, IEEE-IRSI, IEEE-ISM etc. He is member of various professional bodies such as IEEE, ISRS, AeSI, IITMAA. Dr. Chaturvedi is on Editorial board of Journal of Marine Technology and Research, Thailand, GRD Journals etc. Chaturvedi has been organizing many Executive master classes at UPES Dehradun with the eminent persons such as Dr. SUBRAMANIAN Swamy (MP-Rajya Sabha, India), Dr. K.Sivan (Chairman-ISRO), Padmavibhsuhan Dr. Madhavan Nair (Former Chairman-ISRO), Padma Shri A.S.Kiran Kumar (Former Chairman-ISRO) and many more. His area of research is SAR applications for oceans, target detection, Tsunami modelling etc. Recently, Dr. Chaturvedi is been awarded with Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award-2021 in Space Habitat Event, Brazil. Also, he is working as the Convener (Hony.) at Mission Aerospace Foundation of India (Aerofi), India.
