StratoSOL:

2024 1st Place AIAA Undergraduate Individual Aircraft Design Award and

a Blended Wing Body (BWB) Configuration

AIAA Student Member and USC AME student, David Moeller Sztajnbok, won this year’s American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Design Competition!

For this year’s competition, David again submitted an entry into the Undergraduate Individual Aircraft Design Competition. He created a 98-page report showing an overview of the mission, a historical look at similar airplane designs, and the design of the aircraft itself, “StratoSOL“.

His final remark was, “This first-place award was very satisfying, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s. I believe…that it was the first time a Sophomore at USC has placed first in the competition. It is…the first time a USC student places first in over 15 years.” David would also like to thank Dr. Geoffrey Spedding for being his faculty advisor.

Please Join us to congratulate David, and learn more about the exciting StratoSOL and the aircraft design with a Blended Wing Body (BWB) Configuration!

"I will start with a brief overview of previous research done on stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI). Then I will go over my report, so the general process of overview of previous designs, requirements, initial sizing, layout, and analysis. After that, I will start the "revisited" section: I will highlight a few aspects of the design that I could have improved, or aspects that further analysis with a new codebase I wrote have revealed. I will also highlight what other reports did that I could have done, and in general reflect a bit on the design."

David Moeller Sztajnbok

AIAA Student Member, USC AME student

My name is David Moeller Sztajnbok and I am a Junior in Aerospace Engineering at USC. I've participated in two editions of the AIAA Individual Aircraft Design competitions, winning second place in 2023 and first place in 2024. I was part of USC's Design Build Fly team for two years, wherein I was the Aerodynamics, Stability & Control Lead for the 2023-2024 year. Last Summer, I interned at REGENT Craft as a Performance Engineering Intern. Just this year, I am starting the Human-Powered Flight Research Team at USC with the goal of beating the endurance world record of a human-powered aircraft.

Dr. Geoffrey Spedding

Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, USC

Geoffrey Spedding received his Ph.D. in 1981 from the University of Bristol, England. He began work as a Research Associate in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Southern California in the same year, where he worked on models of insect wings and subsequently on models of atmospheres and oceans. He became a full Professor in 2005, and Chair of the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department in January 2010. In July 2017 he returned to 'normal' faculty life
