Digitalization - the crucial advantage for the modern aerospace program

Aerospace development programs are challenged on almost every level imaginable and the global pandemic has further increased this complexity as all industries have been forced to rethink, reimage and reinvent how they develop and manufacture products, while ensuring the health and safety of their employees. The Aerospace and Defense industry, already struggling with executing product development, manufacturing and certification programs, while managing their global supply base, is now faced with the need to change the fundamental ways in which they do business, while working to maintain development programs and continue to be innovative to ensure the future success of their business.

Join Dale Tutt, VP of Aerospace & Defense at Siemens Digital Industries Software (DISW) as he examines the impact of the global pandemic and other challenges on Aerospace development programs, as well as the critical role of digitalization to increase productivity by providing the visibility needed to assess how specific requirements will impact downstream engineering, manufacturing and testing functions of a program.

Dale Tutt is the Vice President of Aerospace and Defense Industry, for Siemens Digital Industries Software. He is responsible for defining overall the overall Aerospace and Defense industry strategy for Siemens Digital Industries Software, driving specific industry requirements into software products and solutions, and leading the definition of industry specific market solutions for Aerospace and Defense customers.

Dale has over 30 years of experience in engineering design, development, and program leadership within the Aerospace industry. Prior to joining Siemens, Dale worked at The Spaceship Company, a sister company to Virgin Galactic, as the VP of Engineering and VP of Program Management, where he led the development and flight test of vehicles for commercial space tourism. While at The Spaceship Company he led the team on a successful flight test to space in December 2018.

Prior to working at The Spaceship Company, Dale spent 18 years at Cessna Aircraft / Textron Aviation in program and project management, systems engineering and integration, advanced design, autopilot integration, simulation development and other engineering roles. In one of his most recent roles at Cessna, he was the Chief Engineer and Program Director of the Scorpion Jet program, where he led a dynamic cross-functional engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing team to design, build and fly the Scorpion Jet prototype from design concept to first flight in 23 months – an approximate 50% reduction in cost and schedule compared to similar programs. Before leaving Textron Aviation, he was the Engineering Director for the Textron Aviation Defense programs, leading the engineering teams for the Scorpion jet, T-6 Texan II trainer, and AT-6 light attack aircraft.

Before joining Cessna, Dale worked as an engineer at Bombardier, Learjet, on the Lear 45 program, and General Dynamics Space System Division on the Atlas I, II and IIAS programs.

Dale has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and an MBA from Wichita State University with a concentration in Finance.

Protecting Planet Earth from NEO-NEA
with Mariella Graziano, Nancy C. Wolfson and Smiriti Srivastava
On the morning of 30 June 1908 in Tunguska, East Siberia (Russia), almost 80 million trees were flattened in just few seconds by an expected event. It was caused by meteorites, a piece of comet or of asteroid about 40 to 50 metres in diameter, which bump into Earth’s atmosphere at great speed, exploding in the air just five to ten kilometres from Earth’s surface. The explosion sent out a fast and powerful shockwave that caused a great deal of destruction across an area roughly two thousand by two thousand kilometres. Estimates of its energy range from 3 – 30 megatons of TNT - enough to destroy a large metropolitan area. At least three people may have died, yet no impact crater was ever found. This was the most harmful known asteroid-related event in recent history.

In this presentation Mariella Graziano GMV’s Executive Director of Space systems, Smiriti Srivastava Co-Lead-Near Earth Object Project Group of Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) and Nancy C. Wolfson Vice Char of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Committee on Near Earth Objects will outline the role of their organizations along with the importance of space missions and inter-agency communication for Planetary Defense. Let’s explore together space missions such as DART and HERA as well as the significance of interagency communication to protect planet Earth from NEOs – NEA. Authorities have started warning about Planetary Defense preparing for any future impact, because sometimes, the Earth atmosphere isn’t enough. The UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) has highlighted that the best response to such a threat is through information-sharing, international cooperation and the coordination of related research and knowledge of best practices. For this purpose, through a series of recommendations UNCOPUOS endorsed and supported the establishment of two International entities: International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) and Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (SMPAG).

Mariella Graziano
GMV’s Executive Director of Space systems
Italy

Mariella Graziano was born in a small village in the South of Italy. She started her carrier at University of Rome La Sapienza, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. It has been most likely the desire of pursuing the understanding of how thinks really work to make her deciding to be an engineer.
Or maybe she was inspired by the Top Gun movie. She is not yet sure about the real reasons, but this is not really important. In 1991 she was selected has one over 25 students to design a space missions under the mentoring of the European Space Agency and important European aerospace companies.

Mariella started her professional career working for a small Italian and technology related company. In 1996 she moved to The Netherlands working for the European Space Agency in the area of system
engineering. Later on she moved to Spain working for GMV in the area of mission and space system analysis. Within GMV Mariella assumed different technical and managerial responsibility. In 2007 she has been appointed as Executive Director of a new Business Unit, Space Segment and Robotics.
She is member and chairman of many international association. Among those, Women In Aerospace Europe, IAC Exploration Committee, Planetary Defence Committee, Global Exploration Conference, etc. She is actively involved in STEM education. She is mother of two fantastic boys, wife of a great man, daughter of great parents. She loves the moon and the mountains, she like arts and culture, music, painting and sculpture. She is a free person.

Ms. Smiriti Srivastava
Co-Lead-Near Earth Object Project Group of Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC)
India

While I learn more and more about this infinite space everyday, there are three things that I am passionate about and that fascinate me the most. First : the development, advancement of the state-of-art space and aerospace technologies. Second : how these technologies form applications and are solutions to so many questions, problems on earth. And third : how can i utilize my skills, experience and awareness to serve people through space, aerospace-based solutions and tools. To pursue this passion, I recently graduated with my Master's in Aerospace Engineering from Technical University of Munich, Germany and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (TUM Asia). During my studies, I was invited to perform my master thesis research at ETH Zurich, Switzerland with focus on lightweight composite aerospace structures, where i also had the opportunity to work on the state-of-art technologies in the European space and aerospace industry.

My motivation for space and STEM education led me to leading, managing and mentoring a student team in Singapore for the development, operation and successful launch of a NASA qualified science payload on the International Space Station (ISS). This payload was successfully approved and launched to ISS by NASA OA-9 Mission (Expedition 55th) on 21 May, 2018 and returned back to planet earth by SpaceX Dragon. My research specifically focussed on learning about the benefits of growing metallic crystals in space compared to the ones grown on earth and utilizing the results for benefit of lives on earth, space. This experience has inspired me to continue my journey in space, aerospace research and also inspire more. Currently, I volunteer for Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) in support of the United Nations (UN) by leading the Near Earth Objects Project Group. I am an active member in the global space community as I continuously promote the space technologies, space policies for planetary defense and space education amongst the youth and public globally.

My areas of interests are Spacecraft and Satellite Technology, Lighweight Aerospace Structures, Aeroelasticity, Composites, Near-Earth Objects, Hypersonic Aerodynamics and Propulsion.
