  • The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)

Are you searching for meaningful work in a team of creative and dedicated scientists and engineers?

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference in a mission-driven, intellectual environment?

If so, we’re looking for someone like you to join Johns Hopkins APL.

New college graduates are important members of the APL community!

We are seeking the next generation of big thinkers to help us tackle the complex research, engineering, and analytical problems that present critical challenges to our nation.

At APL, you will work in dynamic teams charged with developing and delivering solutions that support national priorities. As an incoming new graduate with a background in applied sciences and engineering which may include systems engineering, applied/engineering physics, applied mathematics, statistics, optics or engineering sciences, you may find yourself

    • Determining the system needed to solve a given problem in an effective and economical way. Our systems engineers represent systems by mathematical models for evaluation and parametric definition; integrate system parameters; perform dynamic analysis of closed-loop control systems; develop and conduct experiments with prototype components, subsystems, and total systems.
    • Using modeling and simulation to build guidance and navigation systems. Designing space experiments in research areas like magnetic fields, geophysics, solar effects on the atmosphere, and planetary, comet, and asteroid samplings.
    • Developing mathematical models for system-level evaluation and parametric definition and then conducting experiments with prototype components, subsystems, and total systems.
    • Participating as a technical team member to understand the aspects of an operational community while conducting analyses, interpreting results, and developing recommendations.
    • Supporting senior level physicists in the design, implementation, and integration of equipment for radiological and nuclear threat detection, localization, and defeat of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

    About APL:

At APL we solve complex research, engineering, and analytical problems that present critical challenges to our nation. APL—the nation’s largest university affiliated research center—provides U.S. government agencies with deep expertise in specialized fields to support national priorities and technology development programs. We also serve as independent trusted technical agents to the government, providing continuity for highly complex, multigenerational technology development systems.
