Section activity has been attending, hosting and in one case by summarizing one of them. It hopes to provide significant information to its members, especially in understanding future career opportunities. The survey by Allison Tsay is a good starting point. Albert Moussa's planned panel is an important next step.
More information which we have yet to tap will be found at the AIAA Green Engineering Integration Committee (GEIC). Its purpose "is to promote a holistic, systems approach to improved energy efficiency, sustainability, renewable energy and 'cradle-to-grave' design. GEIC serves as the AIAA focal point for all "green" aerospace-related programs and technologies and works synergistically with the appropriate technical committees to assure that the AIAA membership is adequately informed about all aspects of this critical aerospace activity." Future efforts could also be to survey the literature and sites like OpenCourseWare.
1 Last September, Council members Gary Wolfe, Umanga Balasuriya and Allison Tsay surveyed three aspects of activity in Green Engineering: AIAA activity; a new corporate member in the section, Skai Corporation in Hopkinton, MA; and H2 fuel cell development.
AIAA Webinars and Short Courses were described. The Jan 9, 2020 SciTech Forum 360 Webinar on "The Next Challenge for Aerospace: Global Climate Change" with John Tylko, Professors James Anderson, John Hansman and Philippe Bonnefoy and Paula Bontempi was particularly interesting.

Skai is a pioneer in the air mobility sector based in Hopkinton, MA. Their vision is to make air mobility an everyday option for millions of people while minimizing the environmental impact. Its specs call for 3 hydrogen fuel cells and six rotor propulsion system having a range up to 2 hours, ~150 miles and speeds of 85-115 MPH. It will seat up to five passengers. The team found references to several H2 powered aircraft: Boeing's Phantom Eye in 2010, University of Ulm's HY-4 in 2016, the NASA-funded Cheeta in 2016, and the ZeroAvia Hyflyer after that.

As a fuel, ammonia has a few things going for it. It's good at conducting and absorbing heat, meaning you can get a lot of energy out of every drop. It's also far less flammable than jet fuel, a bonus in terms of fire safety. |
