- In June of 2022, WPI HPRC traveled to New Mexico to compete for the first time in the Spaceport America Cup with project Aquila. After a successful liftoff, the vehicle broke up 5 seconds into flight at an estimated altitude of 2,000 ft. The team immediately pivoted to recovering the vehicle and analyzing the data from photos and videos and our avionics system.
- Over the next few months an extensive failure tree was developed, and the root causes of the failure were slowly narrowed down. This presentation will provide insight into the failure analysis process, discuss the root causes of this failure, and provide mitigation plans to prevent similar failures from occurring in the future.
