    Dear Colleagues and Friends,

This year, the 2021 AIAA Region VI Student Conference will be held virtually by the student branch of the California State University Long Beach. The conference is an opportunity for university students to compete, for cash prizes, in a competition where both their paper and their presentation will be judged.  This event brings the best and the brightest university students from our region together to demonstrate their passion for science, technology, engineering, and math, (STEM) by presenting their work on aerospace related topics.

This year, we have 18 papers in three different categories: 10 in Undergraduate, 4 in Team and 4 in Masters.

The key to a successful competition is getting all of the work (papers and presentations) judged fairly.  We need at least 3 on-line judges to read each paper and score it, based on the rubric that is provided.  It's easy to be a technical judge – it's all on-line so, you can read at your leisure.

Below, I have included the directions for getting on the site and registering a judge.  Once you've done that, you can read as many papers as you like – and, there's even a standard scoring rubric. Please help me out – you'll actually be helping AIAA, the students, and even yourself, as you read these great papers from our region's best and brightest university students.   If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.  AND, if you know someone else, that might be interested in reading a few papers – please pass on the information.

Thanks in advance for your consideration,

    Oleg Yakimenko

Deputy Director, Education, AIAA Western Region (VI)

To Become a Technical, On-Line Judge:

Step 1: you will need to submit a judging application /judging conflict-of-interest survey form at https://www.aiaa-awards.org/a/judgeSolicitationProfiles/create?solicitationId=1187. If you can answer "yes"; to all of the questions, you qualify to be a judge! It is relatively self-explanatory! (You can click the "Back to AIAA Awards Home" (www.aiaa-awards.org) at the upper right corner of the page to go to the main page where eventually you will see "2021 Region VI Student Paper Conference" in the "My Judging Assignments" folder.)

Step 2: Once you submit your application, AIAA HQ will review it and give you an access to the papers (I would say within a day). You will then be able to view and score the papers. For your convenience, see Student Conference SOP for Judging attached.

Step 3: The OpenWater system allows you to download all papers at once (that is what I would recommend doing because it saves a lot of time compared to downloading each paper individually). You can then review them and get back to OpenWater to enter all the scores. The instruction on how to do it is also attached. I have downloaded all the papers myself already, and can send you a complete set as a single zip file (16 Mb) if you want - once you complete Step 1 above, please email me and I will provide you with the link to this archive.

The technical papers are listed by the competition category which usually includes "Masters" (4 this year), "Team" (4 papers), "Undergraduate" (10 papers). Please try to read all papers in one category, so that a variation in the grades you provide affect the total scores within the same category evenly

Your anonymous comments will be available to the on-site judges to assist in making a final decision, and also to students after the conference to help them improving the content and writing style of their future papers.

You need NOT be a subject matter expert to review the papers – the students should be able to present their research in a way that you, as an aerospace professional, can read and comprehend.

Feel free to read as many as you like…

Once you get going, it is even sort of fun!

P.S. In the case you experience any problem, Mr. Michael Lagana, AIAA University Programs Coordinator (MichaelL@aiaa.org), will be able to assist you right away.
