Please join AIAA NFS next Monday for their first and hopefully not last Zoom lunch and learn.  Shae gave this talk as a guest lecture for a Cornell University propulsion class and we managed to persuade him to give an encore presentation to interested members of the Niagara Frontier Section.

This presentation will discuss two emerging technology types of in-space propulsion that will make future spacecraft longer-lived and more capable. Green propulsion uses a type of storable chemical propellant that can deliver as much performance as current hydrazine-based propellants with far less toxicity and handling difficulties.  Multimode propulsion combines chemical propulsion's high thrust and electric propulsion's high specific impulse into a single system so that spacecraft can perform a wider, more flexible range of missions. This talk will explore the need for these two types of propulsion, what they can enable, and some history on past and current efforts to develop mature systems of both types.

Shae Williams is a senior project engineer at the Moog In-Space Propulsion facility in Niagara Falls, New York.  He has worked on green, electric, and multimode propulsion his entire career, first at Digital Solid State Propulsion in Reno, Nevada and then Moog.  He has B.S. and M.S. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Purdue.
