Greater Huntsville Section

Each year the Greater Huntsville Section solicits nominations for its Section awards. These awards are a wonderful way to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of colleagues and co-workers. The Honors & Awards Committee recommends recipients to the Section Council for approval, and the awards are then presented at the GHS Annual Council Installation and Awards Dinner (this year's awards dinner will be on May 22nd from 5 PM to 8 PM at Huntsville Botanical Garden).

Who to Nominate:
The AIAA Greater Huntsville Section wishes to recognize its successful AIAA members through its honors and awards program. To be eligible for a Section award, nominees must be current Section members in good standing effective March 22, 2022.

The citation (25 words or less) may be entered directly onto the one-page nomination form. The nominators may also enter up to 5 bullets to describe the accomplishments and/or contributions of the nominees in support of their nominations. Each bullet/justification is limited to one line using a 10-point font. Photographs are not necessary. Nominations must be received no later than April 8, 2022 by email to distribution@hsv-aiaa.org. Award Nominator must be AIAA members in good standing. They must include their Name, Phone Number and Email address in the email when sending the nomination form. Do not include the Award nominator's name on the nomination form.

This year, we encourage you to consider nominating someone that you know for one of our eight (8) awards.

1) The Hermann Oberth Award is presented to a Section member in recognition of outstanding individual scientific achievement in the field of astronautics or for the promotion and advancement of the aeronautical sciences. A bust of Professor Hermann Oberth and a framed certificate are presented to the recipient.

2) The Holger Toftoy Award is presented to a Section member in recognition of outstanding technical management in the fields of aeronautics and astronautics. An engraved plaque is presented to the recipient.

3) The Konrad Dannenberg Educator of the Year Award is presented to a Section member in recognition of outstanding service to education and promotion of math and science within the community. The award is named in recognition of Konrad Dannenberg, a German-American rocket pioneer who was an avid proponent of education, an active member of the AIAA and an inspiration to the aerospace community.

4) The Martin Schilling Award is presented to a Section member in recognition of outstanding service to the Section, such as major contributions to its growth, technical programs, or administrative functions. The award is named for the Section's founding president, Dr. Martin Schilling.

5) The Earl Pearce Professional of the Year Award is presented to a Section member in recognition of extraordinary dedication, creativity, and leadership while engaged in professional work or activity within the aerospace community. The award is named in recognition of Earl Pearce who has been on the Section's Board of Directors and served as Supernumerary for many years. An engraved plaque is presented to the recipient.

6) The Ed Pruett Young Professional of the Year Award is presented to a Section member of 35 years of age or younger who has demonstrated extraordinary technical skill and dedication in the practice of the Aerospace Engineering profession. The award is named in recognition of Ed Pruett who has been on the Section Board of Directors and served the Section for many years. An engraved plaque is presented to the recipient.

7) The Student of the Year Award (undergraduate) is presented to a Section undergraduate student member in recognition of notable technical accomplishments, active engineering research, outstanding service to AIAA student section, or active STEM outreach in the local community. An engraved plaque is presented to the recipient. Student must be current undergraduate student in good standing as an AIAA member. Student must attend a college or university that is in the Greater Huntsville Section and must be a member of an AIAA student branch. Nominations must be approved by the faculty advisor of the nominee's student branch. An engraved plaque is presented to the recipient.

8) The Student of the Year Award (graduate) is presented to a Section graduate student member in recognition of notable technical accomplishments, active engineering research, outstanding service to AIAA student section, or active STEM outreach in the local community. An engraved plaque is presented to the recipient. Student must be current graduate student in good standing as an AIAA member. Student must attend a college or university that is in the Greater Huntsville Section and must be a member of an AIAA student branch. Nominations must be approved by the faculty advisor of the nominee's student branch. An engraved plaque is presented to the recipient.
