Join us for the expert talk by Dr. Jim Kuchar (MIT Lincoln Lab) on the presentation on a historical overview of the development of Air Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), and its additional improvements made in the mid-2000s to further enhance safety, and the development of the next-generation collision avoidance system, ACAS X, which leverages machine learning techniques to further improve safety, reduce nuisance alerts, and provides the flexibility to accommodate new sensors, aircraft types, and mission profiles.

Following a series of major mid-air collisions in the 1970s and 1980s, Congress mandated the development of an independent, airborne collision avoidance system to improve aviation safety. In response, the FAA initiated a program to develop the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), which has since been deployed on more than 30,000 aircraft worldwide.

Dr. Jim Kuchar is Assistant Head of the Homeland Protection and Air Traffic Control Division at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. He received SB, SM, and PhD degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT focused on flight deck alerting system displays, algorithms, and risk analysis methods. Jim served on the MIT faculty from 1995-2003, after which he joined Lincoln Laboratory leading the development of collision avoidance system technologies for manned and unmanned aircraft. In 2009 he transitioned into managing Lincoln's portfolio of weather / air traffic management programs and moved into his current role overseeing the Laboratory's Air Traffic Control mission area in 2019. A private pilot, Jim has coauthored over 110 reports including 70 refereed journal and conference papers. He is an AIAA Associate Fellow, chairs the National Airspace System Operations panel of the FAA Research, Engineering, and Development Advisory Committee (REDAC), and is an Associate Editor for the AIAA Journal of Air Transportation.
