Hello!
I thought this group would be interested in the relative motion problem that high school students are working on for the upcoming AviCom Flight Sim Lab Open House. The following navigation problem has been sent to teachers of the six schools that are coming to the Open House. Students, if they want to win the challenge, will come with a plan for to intercept the aircraft headed to Pearl Harbor. Feel free to post you solution to the problem here.
Intercept Scenario Details:
The target aircraft was spotted at waypoint ALJAI (N20.675, W158.685) heading 038 degrees magnetic at an altitude of 2500 MSL at a ground speed of 180 knots (nautical miles per hour).
Here is a link to Skyvector showing the predicted course of the target.
Your aircraft is a Cirrus Vision Jet positioned with the engines running, ready for takeoff from Molokai (PHMK) on runway 23.
Use dead reckoning to intercept the target.
Speed ________ (Maximum Operating Speed 250 KIAS)
Course _________ degrees magnetic
Altitude _________
Time to target ____________
