W L Oberkampf Consulting

Bio

Dr. Oberkampf earned his PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Notre Dame in 1970. He has conducted research, development, and analyses in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, flight dynamics, and solid mechanics. His career has involved a balance of both computational and experimental investigations, applied research, and design applications. During the last 25 years he has focused on advancing the state of the art, practice, and implementation of code and solution verification, model validation, and uncertainty quantification of experimental measurements and simulation of systems. After completing graduate school, he served on the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin for 9 years. Leaving academia as an Associate Professor, he moved to Sandia National Laboratories and served in staff and management positions for 29 years, attaining the position of Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff. Since this time, he has been a consultant to government laboratories and business organizations in the U.S. and Europe. He was instrumental in the formation of the ASME Standards Committee on Verification and Validation in Computational Solid Mechanics and continues as an active member. He is also an active member of the AIAA Committee on Standards for Verification and Validation in Computational Fluid Dynamics and the Analysis Management Working Group for NAFEMS. He has published over 180 journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers, and co-authored the book “Verification and Validation in Scientific Computing,” Cambridge University Press, 2010. He has taught 57 short courses, primarily on the topics of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification in the United States and the United Kingdom.  He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
