Webinar: Operation Sandy - Beginning of New Ocean Launching Platforms, Guidance, and Tracking by Kevin Burns

The AIAA New England Section is organizing an expert webinar session. Come and listen to Kevin Burns on “Operation Sandy” - the first major launch of a bombardment-type liquid rocket from a ship. It marked a significant point in naval missile research, paved the way for further studies in intercontinental missiles and sounding rockets, and created a new understanding of ocean launching platforms, guidance, and tracking.

Operation Sandy marked the beginning of the Cold War and the drive to a ballistic missile deterrent system and the US space program. The Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs were preceded by the classified Hermes program, which comprises operations Paperclip, Sandy, and Pushover, and projects Blossom and Bumper. The presentation will focus on Project Sandy which was when a V-2 rocket was launched from the deck of the USS Midway aircraft carrier in 1947.

    Speaker: Kevin Burns
Kevin is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA who is retired after a long career in the aerospace industry working for companies such as Hughes Aircraft Company, Bell Aerospace, Calspan, General Dynamics, Computer Sciences Corporation, General Electric, and Northrop Grumman.

He is the past Chair of the AIAA History Committee and has served on that committee for two decades, he currently serves as the AIAA Aerospace Outreach Director.
