Members: The following information was shared with me as an appeal to STEM mentors - if interested, please contact John Klipfell (contact info below) for more details. Thank you.
Now in its 17th year, please volunteer to support the BBHHS business plan program as an in-class mentor or competition judge!
Since the program began during the 2005-2006 school year, more than 60 members from the Brecksville and Broadview Heights Chambers of Commerce have mentored BBHHS students on developing business plans or later judged their plans in a local high school competition. Although not held in 2020 due to Covid, last school year marked the 16th year that this entrepreneurship business plan program was held at BBHHS. To date, more than 4,000 BBHHS students have participated.
What's happening with this year's business plan program:
· This year we are calling the program the Believe in Ohio / Believe in Yourself Program.
· Again, this year, the business plan program is being conducted as a Capstone Project during the month of May.
· As long-time AP Econ teacher Dathan Cole has retired, we are working with John Mutch (who we have worked with in the past). John has very ably taken over where Dathan left off.
· Altogether, six classes of students (about 125 students), will be participating.
· Although we lost our state funding, the two Chambers are providing $2,500 in funding for competition awards.
· For your information, attached you will find a one page summary of information provided to students to help them prepare their business plans.
Here are two ways you can help:
1. Volunteer to mentor students in class on one or more of the six times and dates shown below.
2. Serve as a competition judge during the week after Memorial Day. (May 30 thru June 4).
Dates & times for which we are asking Chamber members to mentor in-class: (Ideally we would have 3-4 Chamber volunteers in each group.)
Two Classes – One Honors Econ Class (7th Period) and one Academic Econ Class (8th Period):
· Group A on Friday, May 5 – Arrive at Main Office at Noon, Depart at 2pm
· Group B on Wednesday, May 10 – Arrive at Main Office at Noon, Depart at 2pm
Two AP Classes – 1st Period AP and 3rd Period AP:
· Group C on Tuesday, May 16 – Arrive at Main Office at 7:15am, Depart at 10am
· Group D on Friday, May 19– Arrive at Main Office at 7:15am, Depart at 10am
Two AP Classes – 5th Period AP and 6th Period AP:
· Group E on Tuesday, May 16 – Arrive at Main Office at 10:35am, Depart at 12:30pm
· Group F on Friday, May 19 – Arrive at Main Office at 10:35am, Depart at 12:30pm
Volunteer to judge business plans in the end of program competition between May 30 and June 4.
· The top 15-20 Business Plans (as graded by the teacher), will need to be judged (by application of a standardized judging rubric.)
· Ideally, we will have 10-12 people volunteer to do this.
· 6-8 plans to be graded will be emailed to you sometime on May 30, along with instructions, judging guidelines and a standardized judging rubric.
· Judging the plans will likely require 3-5 hours of your time over the 5-6 day time allowed for judging.
· Judges must email their results back to John Klipfell by no later than 10pm on Sunday, June 4, 2023.
· Competition awards will be announced on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
· $2,500 in awards will likely be awarded.
Please let me know how you can help, and if you have any questions. Thank you.
