    • Morning: F-22 Raptor Flight Test Briefing with Steve "Hooter" Rainey, F-22 Chief Test Pilot

Steve Rainey is a 1980 Engineering Mechanics graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy.  He attended pilot training at Vance AFB and flew F-4's at Ramstien AB, GE.  He conducted F-16 & F-4 flight test at Eglin AFB from 1988-1990 prior to attending Test Pilot School.  Tests included safe separation, asymmetric flying qualities, and weapons tests.  Steve received his Master's in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Miami in 1990 and graduated from the US Naval Test Pilot School in 1991 (Class 99).  From 1991-1994 he was assigned to Edwards AFB as an F-16 CTF Flight Commander & Primary Test Pilot for all F-16 avionics testing, night attack systems, flying qualities with external chin pods, HARM targeting system, High Angle of Attack FAM IP.  From 1994-1996 Steve did his time in purgatory at the F-22 Program Office.  This paid off because he was then selected to be the first F-22 Operations Officer responsible for setting up initial operations.  He was the first USAF pilot (3rd pilot ever) to fly the F-22 Raptor; "firsts" include: 1st flight at Edwards AFB, 1st in-flight APU start, 1st in-flight engine shutdown/restart, 1st Air Refuelling, 1st Loads test, 1st emergency landing gear extension, and first F-22 Loads test mission carrying Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs).   He conducted all categories of Raptor flight test and was then selected to be the 411th Flight Test Squadron Commander at the F-22 CTF.  Steve retired in 2000 and was an American Airlines pilot for three years.  His next position was as a Civil Service F-16 pilot at Edwards conducting test and chase.  In 2005, The Boeing Company hired him as their test pilot on the F-22 program and he regularly conducted F-22 flight test in all categories.  In 2014, Lockheed-Martin hired Steve to be the F-22 Chief Test Pilot.  He is currently the only dual-qualified F-22 & F-16 Instructor/Evaluator Pilot.  Steve's Raptor flight tests include Loads, flying qualities, performance, engine tests, jet wake encounter tests, RVSM qualification testing, weapon safe separation tests, integrated weapon release tests, crosswind landing tests, avionics testing, Integrated Systems Evaluations, F-22 Line-in-the-Sky (LIS) Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (AGCAS) testing, Wing Tank Pylon Cover Testing, Low Drag Pylon testing and envelope expansion, AIM-120D and AIM-9X integration and Climatic Lab tests…..pretty much ALL testing on the F-22 Raptor!

    • Afternoon: Virgin Hyperloop Onewith Dr. Anita Sengupta, SVP Systems Engineering

Anita joined Virgin Hyperloop One from NASA JPL where she was most recently the Lead Systems Engineer for Europa Worlds Explorer, where she led the design and technology assessment team to enable exploration of a subsurface ocean.  She spent 16 years at NASA, working everything from Ion Thrusters to leading the Mars Curiosity Rover Supersonic Parachute Decelerator.  She received her PhD in Aerospace Engineering working on Ion Thrusters from USC and was a NASA Astronaut Finalist candidate in 2017.  Anita is also a certified private pilot, advanced SCUBA diver, and motorcyclist.

    • Banquet: LAFD Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Unitwith Chief Richard Fields IV, Battalion Chief, Los Angeles Fire Department

Battalion Chief Fields is a 25 year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department.  He is an accomplished, results-driven professional with a proven track record of leading teams and collaborating in the creation of daring innovations.  He has proven ability to successfully envision, develop, and launch complex technology programs, and is an effective public and private sector coalition builder.

In 2015 Chief Fields brought forward the idea of integrating UAS technology into the LAFD response matrix.  In 2017, the Los Angeles Fire Department launched the LAFD UAS Unit and received a Certificate of Authorization from the FAA in January 2018.  Chief Fields serves as the program coordinator and has directly overseen all aspects of the program from its inception. The Los Angeles Fire Department has emerged as a Public Safety leader in developing and integrating UAS technology in the fire service.

    Event Theme

Southern California has had a rich history of leadership and innovation in the aerospace industry.  Many aircraft, spacecraft, missile, and space exploration programs were conceived and executed here within a several mile radius of each other.  The amount of talent, experience and expertise that resides in the area is immeasurable.  However, the nature, landscape and focus of the local aerospace industry are rapidly changing.  The objective of the AIAA Southern California Aerospace Systems and Technology (SoCal ASAT) Conference is to bring together seasoned and new engineers, researchers, leaders, managers, academia and students and provide a forum to exchange new ideas, review achievements, and chart a new course for aerospace in the area.  Come share your expertise and insights with other local professionals and tap this unprecedented resource.  If you are a student this is an ideal opportunity to showcase your research, sharpen technical presentation skills and meet professionals in the field.

    Evening Banquet

The AIAA Orange County Section Annual Banquet highlighting our activities during the past year and celebrating the achievements of some of our members is held in the evening following the conference.  An invited distinguished speaker will provide a presentation of general interest to all.  Members as well as non-members are welcome.

    High School Poster Displays

High school students are invited to present their science projects or science fair entrees in our poster display area.  Come show off what you've done and meet professionals in the industry and academia.  A special discounted rate of $30 for the conference is available to high school students with a poster display.  For more information or to reserve your spot contact Mr. Dino Roman at dino.roman@boeing.com.

Gohardani Presentation Award in Aeronautics and Aerospace

All presenters in a scheduled track are eligible for the Gohardani Presentation Award in Aeronautics and Aerospace, sponsored by the Springs of Dreams Corporation.  It is awarded to the speaker with the most exceptional all-around presentation judged on content, organization and delivery.  This monetary award will be presented during the dinner banquet along with a certificate.

    Call-for-Presentations

Presentations are being solicited for the 2018 AIAA Southern California Aerospace Systems and Technology Conference.  Full length written papers are not required, but at a minimum, an annotated electronic copy of the final presentation is required for posting on our website.  You are welcomed and encouraged to repeat presentations you have made elsewhere for this local audience.  Students are strongly encouraged to present an outline of their senior thesis or graduate work.  We accept unclassified presentations on all aspects of aerospace systems, technology, vehicle design, program management, aerospace policy, aerospace economics and education.
