Do you know or teach high school students interested in aviation and aerospace? If so, please let them know about the Raisbeck Aviation High School (RAHS) AIAA chapter's Fighter Design Challenge! They will have the opportunity to represent their school in a competition where they design, fly, and iterate advanced fighter aircraft.
Overview
In this project, competitors will design multiple iterations of an advanced next-generation fighter aircraft meant to replace and augment current 5th-generation fighter platforms like the F-22, F-35, SU-57, and J-20.
This aircraft will be designed and tested using X-Plane 9 and the accompanying Plane-Maker software. For those who do not have the software, educators can request free licenses to the Fly to Learn version of X-Plane 9 here.
Aircraft will be designed according to the FDC criteria and scored according to this scoring sheet. More information about these documents can be found on the "Scoring and requirements" page.
Scheduling
Teams will have from March 8th to April 5th to familiarize themselves with Plane-Maker and X-Plane with the option to use a course of instruction provided by RAHS AIAA chapter members.
All participants will be expected to be familiar with the software by the time the first iteration begins - for this reason it is highly recommended to take the course for those who are new to the software.
Teams will have 1 month for each design iteration, with the first beginning on April 5th.
RAHS AIAA chapter members will hold optional office hours throughout the entire project for those who need help learning how to use the software or have project-related questions.
Team Requirements
You may work in teams of up to 5 of competitors choosing if project interest allows (working independently is also allowed). Within teams, there should be at least one designated aircraft designer and at least one designated test pilot, although roles can be as flexible as desired.
Teams will be expected to meet at least twice each week during each design iteration to work on aircraft. All teams will be required to attend one of two monthly meetings to provide status updates and ask questions/ receive help. In the event of scheduling conflicts with multiple team members, a team representative may be sent in their place.
