Spring 2024 Technical Excellence Lecture

High-order accuracy, UMUSCL and Flux-Solution-Reconstruction Techniques
By Emmett Padway

The AIAA HRS Young Professionals Committee is proud to host its Spring 2024 Technical Excellence Lecture in a hybrid lunch & learn format at the NASA Langley Research Center, featuring the work of the 2024 AIAA HRS Laurence Bement YP Paper Competition 1st Place Winner, Emmett Padway. All are encouraged to attend!

BIO: Dr. Emmett Padway is a Research Aerospace Engineer in the Aeroelasticity branch working on finite-element and finite-volume methods for CFD and multidisciplinary optimization and design. He achieved his PhD at University of Wyoming where he developed adjoint-based optimization algorithms for stalled simulations and obtained NASA Graduate Aeronautics Fellowship. He previously worked with Dr. Hiro Nishikawa at the National Institute of Aerospace as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate and Research Engineer.

ABSTRACT: The U-MUSCL scheme has been in wide use in numerical analysis for decades as a robust way to achieve second-order spatial accuracy on regular and mixed-element grids. Since its inception, there has been conflicting information as to its order of accuracy under certain parameters and how to achieve high order spatial accuracy (third-order or higher). The ability of the U-MUSCL scheme to achieve high-order accuracy depends heavily on the details of the code/discretization. This presentation will discuss some of the previous claims of high-order accuracy, clarify some of these confusions, and introduce and demonstrate the flux-solution reconstruction schemes which allow for genuine high-order schemes on regular grids.
