Dr. Harrivel earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan as a Merit Fellow in 2014 on “Monitoring Attentional State with functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy,” involving fNIRS (optical neuroimaging of functional brain activity) and fMRI human subject studies, resting state network analysis, and machine learning for state classification.
Angela is the alternate member of the NASA Institutional Review Board for Human Behavior and Performance, and was proud to volunteer as a TRISH B-SURE mentor.
Angela currently supports Crew Health And Performance for the Science Integration Office of NASA’s Human Research Program.
Angela also serves on the Editorial Board of Cognitive Neuroergonomics as Review Editor for the journal Frontiers in Neuroergonomics, and has served on the scientific committee of multiple international conferences. Angela was a member of the Society for fNIRS at the time it was founded. She also is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Sensor Systems and Information Fusion (SSIF) Technical Committee. She holds multiple licensed patents around the removal of artifacts from time series data, real time state prediction using psychophysiological features, and human monitoring for human-autonomy teaming.
Dr. Harrivel previously and separately obtained a terminal MS in Physics from John Carroll University in Ohio. She has been with NASA for over 25 years working in optical diagnostics and data systems for spaceflight experiments as a design engineer at NASA Glenn including leading and flying on simulated microgravity flight campaign experiments, and then in human performance and physiological monitoring for commercial aviation safety as a biomedical researcher at NASA Langley including leading a “Training for Attention Management” Safety Enhancement for the international Commercial Aviation Safety Team. She came to NASA with industry experience in software validation and radiation measurements.
