Sustainability has recently been identified as the greatest challenge facing the modern aviation field. Given the extreme power and energy characteristics of transport-class aircraft, aviation remains one of the most difficult industry sectors to decarbonize. Several alternative energy carriers are actively being considered to address the environmental impacts of future generations of aircraft, though with each bringing significant technoeconomic considerations that must be addressed before these systems can be viably implemented. During this presentation, a summary of key advantages, challenges, and developmental needs are discussed for several sustainable energy systems currently envisioned by the aviation industry. Visions of a near-term energy evolution and a future long-term energy transition scenario are proposed, highlighting the importance of alignment in strategy across global stakeholders.
