The AIAA New England Section is organizing an expert seminar session . Come and listen to Dr Phillip Hattis on Placing Americans on the Moon: A Look at the Technical and Political Contexts
Getting people to the Moon requires sustained effort to enable applicable, advanced technical capability development. That necessarily occurs in the context of needed political support to fund human spaceflight programs. The technological and political circumstances from the inception to completion of Apollo program will be reviewed. That environment will be compared with and contrasted to the circumstances surrounding subsequent US human spaceflight programs with a focus on how that has impacted efforts to return to the Moon and to go beyond.
Dr. Hattis has been at Draper since 1974. Technical areas of responsibility have included:Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) and systems engineering for launch, space, lunar landing, planetary landing, hypersonic, missile defense, and airdrop vehicles. He was the technical lead for the Space Shuttle Orbit Flight Control and numerous flight systems since then. He currently is working on the next generation of human lunar landing systems. He served four years on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, participated in program and technology review teams for NASA and the National Research Council, and was elected to AIAA national leadership positions. Dr. Hattis is a Fellow of the AIAA and also a lifelong student of space exploration history.
