The AIAA New England Section is organizing an expert webinar session . Come and listen to Paul DeTrempe talk about his work at Draper investigating navigation methods for safe lunar landing.
A novel method for using hazard detection and avoidance sensors (e.g. lidar) for navigation will be covered in detail, with application to a lunar landing scenario. Topics to be discussed include background on state-of-the-art lunar landing concept-of-operations, hazard detection (HD) sensors, selecting a safe landing site, and using HD sensors for navigation on the way to touchdown. Methods for incorporating hazard detection information to help locate the spacecraft relative to a target will be presented, as well as ways to predict the touchdown ellipse prior to landing in order to better select a landing site in-the-loop.
