An AIAA Professional Development Lecture Series Presentation, via Zoom

    presented by

    Robert C. Winn, Ph.D., P.E.

Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineer and Principal Emeritus of Engineering Systems Inc.

Friday, January 19th, 12:00-1:00 PM PST

Aircraft accident reconstruction is often hampered by a lack of information.  In some accidents, all the reconstructionist has available is the wreckage.  That leaves a lot of room for differing opinions on the cause of the accident.  But as long as the laws of physics are satisfied, many causes of the accident are possible.  The greater the amount of data, the narrower the window of possible causes.  Unfortunately, sometimes impossible causes of an accident are offered, either because the expert makes a mistake, or the expert intentionally tries to deceive the court.  In this presentation, Dr. Winn will show examples of each of the above.

Dr. Winn is a mechanical/aeronautical engineer and Principal Emeritus of Engineering Systems Inc. (ESI). ESI provides a wide range of technical support capabilities in essentially every engineering, scientific, and medical discipline. Dr. Winn has been with ESI since 1994 and during that time has reconstructed hundreds of aircraft accidents involving ultralights to airliners. Dr. Winn retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1991 after a 22-year career. He was an instructor pilot in four different Air Force aircraft, taught aeronautical engineering at the USAF Academy, and served as Chief Scientist of the USAF European Office of Aerospace Research and Development in London, England. He is a Fellow of AIAA and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Dr. Winn has directed research and has published over 70 technical papers, technical reports, and articles. He has also given numerous presentations on a wide variety of technical and educational topics.

The presentation will be on Friday, January 19th, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM PST via Zoom. The Zoom link for the meeting is at the bottom of this message.

This lecture is sponsored by Orange County AIAA. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, or AIAA, provides the voice of the aerospace profession through innovation, technical excellence and global leadership.

Member benefits include access to in-person and virtual events with up to 10,000 forum participants annually, the opportunity to join 71 Technical Committees, 21 Integration and Outreach Committees, and 20 Committees on Standards at the national level. Members receive the monthly magazine Aerospace America, the flagship publication of the AIAA. Other offerings include access to technical business courses and online learning, and Aerospace Perspective Seminars. AIAA also provides a Career Center, and access to Meeting Papers and Proceedings.
