    Description:

Among the new airplanes are aircraft like the Supersonic business jet.  There are two proposals out there, and maybe neither will ever make it into flight.  After all, there are still roadblocks to flying at supersonic speeds, and there is the issue of cost.  Building the airplane is a challenge in itself, but building one that will sell at a reasonable cost is another challenge.

On the other end of the spectrum is the AgustaWestland AW609.  This is a tilt-rotor airplane that looks to take advantage of vertical lift and transition to an airplane mode for speed.  It has been built, taking advantage of the technology derived from the military V-22 Osprey technology.  The AW609 is no copy of the V-22; it is smaller, and the pilot interaction is somewhat different.

Our speaker will also discuss the newest business jets and the certification of the Boeing 737 MAX, including the system that is causing the airplane to be grounded.

Jim Richmond is a graduate of the Air Force Test Pilot School.  He retired from the Air Force as the Director of Operations and Programs at the Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base.  After his Air Force career, Jim spent 22 years with the FAA as a Test Pilot and manager.  After a tour in Afghanistan with the U.S. Embassy he returned to the U.S. as the Chief Test pilot for the FAA nationwide.  Jim now runs a consulting business as a Designated Engineering Representative for the FAA.
