About the Futures in Aerospace Scholarship:

The Futures in Aerospace Scholarship program was started in 1985 by AIAA Hampton Roads Section. The objective of the scholarship is to encourage graduating high school seniors to pursue a career in engineering or the physical or applied sciences pertinent to aerospace.

The scholarship was conceived by Mr. “Pete” Peterson (Langley Research Center Director and HRS Council member) and Mr. Bobby Berrier (HRS Chairman). A major fund-raising drive to fund the scholarship was led by Dr. John Duberg, Dr. Lee Beach, and Dr. John Whitesides (HRS Council members). The scholarship began by awarding one scholarship of $1000 in 1985.

Thanks to the generosity of our section members, corporate sponsors, our annual golf tournament fundraiser, and good stewardship of the endowment fund by the council over the years we have been able to give at least one and often two or even three scholarships every year since. In 2019 AIAA HRS awarded $4000 through two $2000 scholarships. Counting the two winners this year, AIAA HRS has given out 77 scholarships totaling $132,850.00 since 1985.

Applicants must be graduating from a high school located in the area served by the AIAA Hampton Roads Section as defined in the scholarship guidelines or be a dependent of a member of the Hampton Roads Section of the AIAA.  Applicants must be applying for enrollment in a higher education institution with a major in engineering or the physical or applied sciences pertinent to aerospace.  Additional scholarship information including a list of previous winners can be found on the AIAA HRS website scholarship page.
