On March 10, 2025, 6:00 pm US Central Time, the AIAA Certification by Analysis (CbA) Community of Interest (CoI) held a special topic meeting presented by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). This meeting included two presentations, described below. A recording of the meeting is attached to this AIAA Engage entry for those who were unable to attend live.
Topic 1: A Verification and Validation Study for Stall Speed Determination toward Certification by Analysis: Overview
Speaker: Yuta Sawaki, Assistant Manager, Aerodynamic Engineering Section, Aerospace Systems Company, KHI
Contents: KHI is conducting research for the practical application of CbA through a trial focused on stall speed determination as a part of NEDO Aircraft DX project. In this activity, the basic idea replicating stall conditions to be demonstrated in the flight tests through analysis is clarified based on the FAA regulation and AC description. The method being explored involves demonstrating these conditions using CFD-CSD coupling analysis. The coupling analysis, as well as the CFD and the CSD analyses themselves, will be verified, and some validation tests, including a wind tunnel test using an elastic model of CRM-HL configuration, are to be conducted. An overview of the activity will be presented.
Speaker bio: Yuta Sawaki is an expert in CFD analysis and has a Ph.D of Engineering. He has been involved in the research and development of CFD analysis technology at KHI and has participated in many workshops such as HLPW. In this project, he is the lead for the overall activity including planning and documentation of the V & V process and CFD-CSD coupling analysis.
Topic 2: Efforts to Build a Process to Realize Flight CbA
Speaker: Takashi ISHIDA, Associate Senior Researcher, XANADU project team, JAXA
Abstract: Current aircraft certification is based on ground tests and flight tests. Due to improvements in the accuracy of analysis tools, improvements in computer performance, and the growing need to reduce aircraft development time and costs, there is active discussion of Certification by Analysis (CbA), which uses tools to replace ground and flight tests. Guidelines and Recommended Practice regarding CbA have been published by AIAA, NASA, EASA, and Airbus/Boeing. Toward the realization of flight CbA, JAXA and MHI are jointly working on building a process based on AIAA Recommended Practice, and this talk introduces this research activity briefly.
Speaker bio: Takashi ISHIDA is an associate senior researcher in JAXA and a CFD specialist. He has been developing CFD algorithms and tools for practical use in JAXA. He is now involved in Aircraft DX project funded by NEDO and engaged in research activities to realize flight CbA.
